Silk is a passion

Within the scope of the “Bursa Silk Comes to Life Again” project, the “Silk is a Passion-2: Carpet and Photography” exhibition consisting of silk carpets woven by BUSMEK trainees and black and white photographs of Fahrettin Beceren at the Umurbey Silk Production and Design Center was showcased with the opening held at the Tayyare Cultural Center.

Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Zehra Sönmez, who attended the opening, said, “In the face of the danger of disappearance of sericulture, which has become a symbol of our culture for centuries, Bursa Metropolitan Municipality initiated ‘the“ Bursa Silk Comes to Life Again’ project. In this context, BUSMEK contributes to the survival of sericulture by taking part in every stage of silk production and for future generations to recognize and love the sericulture”. Sönmez said, “With the vision of keeping alive our traditional arts that are about to be forgotten, BUSMEK continues to work on the production of Bursa silk from cocoon to the final product. “The handcrafted carpets produced by BUSMEK trainees are processed in the carpet workshops in Orhaneli, Büyükorhan, Keles, Harmancık and İnegöl districts.”

At the exhibition, citizens had the opportunity to watch live all stages of the formation of silk, with the workshops prepared by the BUSMEK Umurbey Silk Production and Design Center. They closely examined how the traditional silk spinning machine called the recoil catapult and devdah, which are of great importance in sericulture, are operated, how the threads are dyed, and how the fabrics and carpets are woven with these threads.

Head of Social Services Department Numan Şeker, Social Affairs and Education Services Branch Manager İbrahim Karaman, Handicapped Branch Manager Pelin Feymi, BUSMEK managers, BUSMEK trainees and guests attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition, which attracted many visitors.

The special exhibition featuring handcrafted products can be seen at Tayyare Cultural Center (TKM) until Saturday, January 12th.
