Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Alinur Aktaş, who made examinations at Umurbey Silk Production and Design Center, said that they initiated their efforts to make the silk, which is an important value of the city, reach more markets in the world.

Highlighting the cultural values of Bursa, the Metropolitan Municipality accelerated its activities in reviving Bursa Silk, bringing it to new markets and transferring it to future generations.

Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Alinur Aktaş examined the works carried out in Umurbey Silk Production and Design Center on site. Observing the whole process of silk from cocoon to yarn and product formation, Mayor Aktaş emphasized the necessity of carrying “Bursa Silk” to the future.

Contribution to employment
Mayor Aktaş stated that the Metropolitan Municipality attaches importance to the survival of sericulture, and that the evaluations are ongoing so that the products can find more markets and produce healthier production. Stating that about 100 people were employed at 11 different points in the mountain regions, İnegöl and Mustafakemalpaşa within the scope of the project, Mayor Aktaş said, “We expect support from many institutions and organizations, especially the Bursa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BTSO), at the point of evaluating our productions and purchasing them in order to give them as gifts to the guests. The Metropolitan Municipality does not have any profit margin here. On the contrary, we make sacrifices. We provide trainings through BUSMEK. We are promoting the transfer of the Bursa Silk process to the whole city through the Culture and Tourism Branch Directorate. We provide the accomodation and other expenses of our students who are interested in the subject.”

Noting that it is necessary to protect this business in order to survive the sericulture in Bursa, to transfer it to future generations and to provide employment, Mayor Aktaş stated that Bursa Kültür A.Ş. will also take steps in the fields of pursuit of production, sale and launch. Drawing attention to the importance of the sustainability of the project, Mayor Aktaş said, “We are writing a project to BEBKA by Bursa Kültür A.Ş. on behalf of the Metropolitan Municipality. We carry out activities to obtain the geographical indication registration certificate for Bursa Silk, encourage and support the productions. We will ensure the recognition of silk, which is a Bursa brand, in Turkey and throughout the world.”
